Detailed 8-page English Literature Essay Plans on Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’, Fred.

Essay Plans are organised in three sections:

  1. Section 1: Fred is shown to embody the Christmas spirit and to convey the importance of adopting a charitable and forgiving approach towards others. Fred acknowledges the privileges that Scrooge, and those of his class, experience and in doing so recognises the particular responsibilities and duties associated. As such, Fred demonstrates a sense of societal awareness that Scrooge ignores and rejects. Fred emits both a physical and metaphorical warmth to those around him. The juxtaposition between Scrooge and Fred is clear: Fred is arguably presented as the antithesis of Scrooge.

  2. Section 2: Fred appears to symbolise the good in people, and provides an example of how we should choose to behave towards one another. Fred appears stubborn in his refusal to concede to his uncle’s negative attitude towards Christmas and recognises that Scrooge’s self-imposed isolation is detrimental to all but perhaps, more critically, to himself.

  3. Section 3: Fred symbolises the importance of having a generosity of mind and of spirit through his whole-hearted acceptance of Scrooge, despite his previous slights, insults and rejection. In addition to this, Fred serves the function of reinforcing the integral role that family plays in the life of an individual, offering an opportunity of belonging, purpose and meaning. As such, family offers an opportunity to mitigate against the loneliness, isolation and exclusion that an individual might otherwise experience. Observing the interaction of Fred and his family on Christmas Day allows Scrooge to acknowledge the potential of a family unit to have an enriching and nourishing potential that offers a true sense of meaning and of purpose.
