Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol - Presentation of Tiny Tim Essay Plan - eBook
Detailed 8-page English Literature Essay Plans on Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’, the Presentation of Tiny Tim.
Essay Plans are organised in three sections:
Section 1: Tiny Tim is presented as a pious, good character, displaying a degree of righteousness, virtuousness and kindness in a world that appears lacking in these traits and values. Despite his suffering and struggle, Tiny Tim retains a kind, compassionate and generous spirit, both towards his own circumstances but also towards those in his wider community, providing an exemplar to others as to how we should engage with the world around us. Furthermore, the extent of the suffering and difficulty experienced by Tiny Tim is used as a means to expose the extent of the hardship endured by the most vulnerable in society – children.
Section 2: Tiny Tim serves a symbolic role: he puts a face to the thousands of faceless poor children that Dickens saw in London every day – those who experienced profound struggle and desperation. As such, a fundamental aspect to the character of Tiny Tim is to offer a ‘human’ face to the suffering of children in Victorian England. In humanising the struggle of the poor, Dickens implores readers to accept the urgency and gravity of offering assistance and aid to support the most vulnerable and unfortunate in society.
Section 3: Tiny Tim’s drastic improvement in health arguably conveys the senselessness of such deaths. In addition, Dickens exposes how such deaths are clearly avoidable rather than being an inevitable occurrence. It is clear that Dickens challenges the perception of the inevitability of the death of Tiny Tim through exposing that a change in individual or societal attitudes has the potential to solve personal and social problems. Through Tiny Tim’s survival at the end of the novella, Dickens offers an example through which individuals can engage with those less fortunate in society in a productive, meaningful manner which allows for a more compassionate, humane interaction with others which overall leads to greater benefit for wider society.
